SoftBank Group is acquiring ABB Group's robotics business unit for $5.375 billion, with the transaction expected to close in mid-to-late 2026 pending regulatory approval. The unit employs about 7,000 people and generated $2.3 billion revenue in 2024, a decline from $2.5 billion the previous year, representing roughly 7% of ABB's revenue. Sami Atiya will exit once the acquisition completes. SoftBank aims to revive sales at the robotics spinoff and incorporate the business into its broader robotics and physical AI strategy. Robotics is one of four strategic focus areas alongside AI chips, AI data centers, and energy.
