Opening our minds to AI-moderated research
Briefly

AI moderation in qualitative research generates mixed feelings among practitioners, as it can threaten the value of human insight. A former colleague expressed disgust at the prospect of AI taking over qualitative roles, echoing a common concern in the field. Yet, the author's experience with developing an AI moderator, DeepNeed, revealed that AI can complement human researchers by opening more opportunities and maintaining the essence of qualitative work. By addressing common critiques regarding AI's probing abilities, emotional insight, and rapport-building, there's potential for a collaborative future in qualitative research.
AI moderation can feel threatening to qualitative researchers who value human insight, but it can also offer new opportunities and enhance strategic impact.
Moving from defensiveness to gratitude, I found that AI moderation respects our 'rules for the dance' and preserves the essence of qualitative work.
