OpenAI is reviewing evidence that DeepSeek, a Chinese start-up, may have harvested data from its A.I. technologies in violation of terms of service. This practice, known as distillation, involves using data from one system to enhance another. OpenAI has stated that they do not permit the use of their generated data for competitive purposes. The company's concerns are heightened as DeepSeek's technologies have matched top existing market performances, causing alarm among tech firms and instability in the U.S. financial markets, underscoring the ongoing race in A.I. superiority.
OpenAI is currently investigating whether DeepSeek has violated its terms of service by harvesting data from its A.I. systems in order to enhance its own technologies.
We are aware of indications that DeepSeek may have inappropriately distilled our models, and will share information as we know more, said OpenAI spokeswoman Liz Bourgeois.
