"It fostered his emotional dependence while systematically painting the people around him as enemies. It told him his mother was surveilling him. It told him delivery drivers, retail employees, police officers, and even friends were agents working against him. It told him that names on soda cans were threats from his 'adversary circle.'"
"We continue improving ChatGPT's training to recognize and respond to signs of mental or emotional distress, de-escalate conversations, and guide people toward real-world support. Suzanne Adams, 83, was fatally beaten and strangled by her 56-year-old son, Stein-Erik Soelberg, who then killed himself at their Greenwich, Connecticut home. Adams' estate filed a wrongful death lawsuit against OpenAI and Microsoft in California Superior Court, alleging ChatGPT validated and intensified Soelberg's paranoid delusions and directed those delusions toward his mother. The complaint alleges ChatGPT fostered emotional dependence, told him his mother was surveilling him, and suggested others were agents acting against him. OpenAI said it will review the filings, is improving ChatGPT training to recognize distress, de-escalate, and provide crisis resources.
