""Anthropic serves an expensive product to rich people,""
""We are glad they do that and we are doing that too, but we also feel strongly that we need to bring AI to billions of people who can't pay for subscriptions.""
""we keep your conversations with ChatGPT private from advertisers.""
OpenAI began testing ads in ChatGPT for logged-in adult users in the US with Free accounts and the ad-supported 'Go' tier, while excluding Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu subscribers from ads. The test followed a rival’s Super Bowl commercial lampooning ad-supported chatbots; OpenAI called the ads dishonest and framed the rival as serving a pricier product for wealthier customers while stressing the need to expand access to those who cannot pay. OpenAI faces heavy investment and operating costs after more than $60 billion sunk into the venture and does not expect positive cash flow until around 2030, making ad revenue a potential lifeline. Other AI firms are also exploring ads; Google is planning ads for Gemini, while Perplexity paused advertising last year. OpenAI states that conversations, chat history, memories, name, email, precise location, IP address, and sensitive information (for example health or politics) will never be shared with advertisers, while some ad personalization has been enabled.
