"cooling system and data center cooling approach for their GB200 deployment seems wasteful due to the size and lack of facility water use, but does provide a lot of flexibility and fault tolerance,"
"An Nvidia staffer said Microsoft's cooling approach for a Blackwell deployment seemed "wasteful.""
"Microsoft said its system promotes efficient heat dissipation and optimizes power delivery."
Nvidia is deploying GB200 Blackwell GPUs at Microsoft and other tech companies to meet rising AI compute demand. GB200 is roughly twice as powerful as the prior Hopper generation, and GB300 generation is now available. One installation used two GB200 NVL72 racks, each housing 72 GPUs. Servers in that deployment use liquid cooling while the facility employs a separate building-level system to expel heat, apparently relying on air rather than facility water. That configuration reduces facility water use while offering flexibility and fault tolerance. Microsoft's system promotes efficient heat dissipation and optimizes power delivery.
