Jensen Huang, CEO of Nvidia, praised the quality of Chinese AI researchers, highlighting their employment by US firms like Anthropic and OpenAI. In a discussion with Ben Thompson of Stratechery, he described these researchers as world-class and noted the impressive advances from Chinese companies like DeepSeek. Huang stressed the necessity of competition for the growth of AI firms, while also warning that regulatory challenges could hinder US progress in the face of rising international competition.
The researchers, the AI scientists in China, they're world-class. These are not Chinese AI researchers, they're world-class AI researchers.
International competition is healthy - but only if regulations don't prevent the US from keeping up, he said.
DeepSeek is deeply excellent work. To give them anything short of that is a lack of confidence so deep that I just can't even tolerate it.
Everybody loves competition. Companies need competition to inspire themselves, nations need that, and there's no question we spur them.
