Copilot attempted to outperform ChatGPT in playing chess on an Atari 2600 emulator. Caruso explained ChatGPT's struggles with board tracking to Copilot. Confident, Copilot claimed it could anticipate moves effectively but admitted some limitations. Caruso provided the necessary board updates manually during the game. Ultimately, Copilot's moves were ineffective, resulting in significant material loss while only inflicting minimal losses on the Atari. While Copilot showed potential, reality proved its abilities were overstated.
Copilot insisted not only could it play chess, but it was also jolly good at it, claiming it could think 10-15 moves ahead but would stick to 3-5 moves against the 2600.
Copilot boasted, 'I make a strong effort to remember previous moves and maintain continuity in gameplay, so our match should be much smoother.'
Despite claiming proficiency, Copilot's moves resulted in losing two pawns, a knight, and a bishop, while the Atari 2600 Video Chess was only down a single pawn.
Caruso would need to give the chatbot a screenshot of the board after the Atari's move, feeding Copilot's moves into Video Chess by hand.
