Meta AI layoffs today: 600 jobs are already being cut from Alexandr Wang's superintelligence lab
"Meta, which owns and operates Facebook and Instagram-as well as Threads, Messenger, and WhatsApp-announced on Wednesday it is laying off about 600 employees from its new AI "superintelligence" research lab."
"By reducing the size of our team, fewer conversations will be required to make a decision, and each person will be more load-bearing and have more scope and impact,"
"We've had a strong quarter both in terms of our business and community: I'm excited to build personal superintelligence for everyone in the world."
Meta cut roughly 600 roles from its newly formed AI "superintelligence" research lab focused on pursuing systems that could surpass human intelligence. The lab followed a reported $14.3 billion investment in Scale AI and the recruitment of Alexandr Wang as chief AI officer. Meta plans heavy capital expenditures, targeting $60–$65 billion in 2025, and is rapidly deploying AI advertising features while constructing a large Manhattan data center to support AI offerings. The company reported Q2 2025 revenue of $47.52 billion and EPS of $7.14, beating expectations, and its shares dipped modestly in morning trading.
