Inside the illustration with Yuko Shimizu
Briefly

The artist reflects on their education at art school, where they experimented with various styles but ultimately returned to their original style, now enhanced with new skills. They discuss their commercial work, explaining that it is driven by project briefs rather than personal inspiration. The emphasis is on the importance of understanding the subject matter thoroughly, as it informs their creative process. Finally, they express that being recognized for their unique style by clients simplifies the work relationship and fosters strong results.
I learned to build on top of it with the skills I'd learned, like oil painting or figure drawing - things that don't necessarily come out in my work.
It's fun to learn new things, and it's this idea of building knowledge that gives me the ideas and concepts to materialise the illustrations I'm creating.
When clients give me work, it's not random. They think I'm the right person for it, so that's why I get it.
If I'm the right artist and I'm equipped for what they need, it's so much easier to deliver strong results.
