Google's AI Mode, announced at the I/O developer conference, represents a significant advancement in AI search capabilities. This chatbot-style interface allows for interactive, conversational searches, enabling users to conduct complex inquiries. Powered by the Gemini 2.5 model from DeepMind, AI Mode synthesizes answers from various sources, effectively addressing multipart questions. Google aims to enhance user experience by improving how searches are processed, allowing for advanced queries that standard search functions may not accommodate. AI Mode will be integrated across Google apps, making it widely accessible to users this summer.
AI Mode is really our most powerful version of AI search," Robby Stein, Google's VP of Product for Search, tells Fast Company.
We're seeing this being used for the more sophisticated set of questions people have," Stein says.
The main magic of the system is this new advanced modeling capability for AI Mode, something called a query fan-out where the model has learned to use Google.
It generates potentially dozens of queries off of your single question.
