Google CEO Sundar Pichai says we're just a decade away from a new normal of extraterrestrial data centers | Fortune
"One of our moonshots is to, how do we one day have data centers in space so that we can better harness the energy from the sun that is 100 trillion times more energy than what we produce on all of Earth today?"
"But there's no doubt to me that a decade or so away will be viewing it as a more normal way to build data centers,"
Google plans to construct AI data centers in space to harness solar energy more efficiently. Project Suncatcher targets solar-powered solutions for energy-intensive data centers. The company will launch two pilot satellites in early 2027 in partnership with satellite imagery firm Planet to test AI hardware in orbit. Space-based data centers are expected to lower carbon emissions relative to terrestrial centers and could become more common within about a decade. Other firms and startups are also pursuing AI-equipped satellites and orbital centers. The overall capital and construction costs for widespread implementation remain uncertain.
