Google is implementing an AI-driven age estimation model to enhance online safety for children and teenagers across its platforms, including YouTube. This model analyzes user behavior and data to estimate whether they are under or over 18, applying age-appropriate restrictions accordingly. Users flagged as underage will be informed of changes to their settings and provided options for age verification. This initiative aligns with increased regulatory focus on child safety online, influenced by legislation like KOSA and the Kids Off Social Media Act.
"This year we'll begin testing a machine learning-based age estimation model in the U.S.," wrote Jenn Fitzpatrick, SVP of Google's "Core" Technology team.
"This model helps us estimate whether a user is over or under 18 so that we can apply protections to help provide more age-appropriate experiences."
The company said it would bring its AI-based age estimations to more countries over time.
The change likely comes in response to the heightened attention surrounding online child safety in the US.
