High-profile AI screwups are occurring frequently, demonstrating that experienced attorneys need more training to spot caselaw hallucinations. Law schools are preparing students for legal practice involving generative AI by introducing mandatory AI competency programs. Mississippi College School of Law will require an Introduction to AI and the Law certification for first-year students, joining Case Western Reserve University School of Law. The certification was developed with Wickard.ai and founder/CEO Oliver Roberts. The program combines foundational instruction, hands-on training with AI-powered legal tools, ethics and regulatory education, and an assessment leading to an AI legal practice certification. Sessions cover LLM basics, best practices, ethical use in research and drafting, and federal and state AI regulations.
