"Ding was originally indicted in March 2024. A superseding indictment returned in February 2025 described seven categories of trade secrets stolen by Ding and charged Ding with seven counts of economic espionage and seven counts of theft of trade secrets. According to the evidence presented at trial, between approximately May 2022 and April 2023, while a Google employee, Ding stole more than 2,000 pages of confidential information about Google's artificial intelligence technology to help the People's Republic of China."
A federal jury in San Francisco convicted former Google software engineer Linwei (Leon) Ding, 38, on Jan. 29 of seven counts of economic espionage and seven counts of theft of trade secrets after an 11-day trial before U.S. District Judge Vince Chhabria. Ding allegedly stole more than 2,000 pages of confidential information about Google's artificial intelligence technology between May 2022 and April 2023 while employed at Google. A superseding indictment returned in February 2025 described seven categories of trade secrets stolen. Ding faces up to 15 years for each economic espionage count and up to 10 years for each theft count. Federal officials emphasized protecting AI innovation and national security.
