The scammers impersonated Jay Shooster and called his dad, convincing him that Jay had been in a car accident and urgently needed bail money, which nearly led to a $35,000 transfer.
Frank recalled, 'It was my son, Jay. He was hysterical, but I knew his voice immediately. He said he had been in an accident, broke his nose, had 16 stitches, and was in police custody.'
The situation escalated when a caller claiming to be an attorney instructed Frank to pay the bond using cryptocurrency, an unusual and suspicious procedure that ultimately led to his realization of the scam.
Frank stated, 'It's devastating to get that kind of call. My son has a political campaign and this experience has been traumatizing for our family.'
