Execs: Combined Windstream/Uniti Could Win BEAD for 500K Fiber Builds; Big AI Opportunity
Briefly

Management is enthusiastic about the opportunity to expand Kinetic's FTTH footprint by at least one million homes past the current 1.9 million target. Half of the one million homes are expected to be BEAD supported.
Windstream has a strong focus on Tier 2 and Tier 3 markets, where locations are most likely to be eligible for BEAD funding, potentially giving the company a cost advantage.
Windstream CFO Drew Smith stated that the company achieves a comparatively low average fiber deployment cost of $650 per passing, due in part to prior FTTN investments.
Management concluded that both Windstream and Uniti would be better off if they were to recombine, with an anticipated merger closing in the second half of 2025.
