The OpenEuroLLM initiative, backed by the European Union, aims to create open-source language models to bolster digital sovereignty in Europe. Led by experts Jan Hajič and Peter Sarlin, the project seeks to provide European companies with AI technology that they own, fostering innovation within the bounds of EU regulations. Drawing on insights from open-source software successes, the consortium of 20 institutions intends to develop transparent, multilingual models, enhancing compliance and reducing dependency on proprietary foreign technology, with funding from the EU's Digital Europe Program and support from STEP.
"The models that OpenEuroLLM will build will be fully open, to exploit the advantages of Open Source that have been so successful in software development in the past," Hajič told InfoWorld.
"Many European businesses are already experimenting with AI, but with proprietary models, they don't own the technology they build upon," Sarlin said.
"Hopefully, the project can serve as an inspiration for a regulatory framework that embraces open source," Sarlin added.
"The project has received funding from the EU's Digital Europe Program," the article states, noting its inclusion in the EU's Strategic Technologies for Europe Platform.
