Culture Through Tension: Leading Interdisciplinary Teams with Nick Gillian
"I am at heart someone who has been working on machine learning and sensing my whole career. I really love working with machine learning and AI and solving deep sensor problems. I've been at Archetype for the last few years since we founded the company. Before that, I was at Google for almost a decade where I was running AI machine learning teams, doing a lot of on-device sensing."
"Before that, I worked at Samsung Research and ran my own consulting company. Then before that, I was in academia for a long time. I did my PhD in machine learning and real-time sensing way back in the early 2000s before machine learning was cool and everyone was working on it. Then I was at MIT for multiple years where I did a postdoc there. So, for almost 20 years now, I've been working on machine learning and sensing. Yeah, I've really loved that life."
Archetype builds physical AI systems that sense and interpret real-world data from hardware sensors. The company integrates machine learning, on-device intelligence, and diverse sensors such as cameras, microphones, temperature and electrical sensors, radar, LIDAR, and even WiFi to extract meaning from sensor signals. The co-founder and CTO has focused on machine learning and real-time sensing for nearly twenty years, with experience spanning academia (PhD and MIT postdoc), industry research at Samsung, and running AI teams at Google. Prior work emphasized on-device sensing and operationalizing machine learning to solve deep sensor problems in deployed systems.
