Citi poaches IBM exec to accelerate its AI ambitions: See the memo
"Varshney comes from IBM, where he was the head of data and artificial intelligence for the technology pioneer's consulting business. "The bank has also begun using AI to strengthen customer service in its US personal banking business through a "multi-year initiative to enhance our customers' experience through specialized GenAI tools, driving efficiency and operational excellence," Selva wrote in the memo. "With Shobhit's leadership, we will accelerate the hard work that has been underway for more than a year to integrate the power of AI into Citi's strategy and operations," Selva wrote in the note to employees."
Shobhit Varshney, previously head of data and artificial intelligence for IBM's consulting business, will lead Citi's AI strategy and efforts to scale AI across the firm. He will report to Anand Selva and work closely with CTO David Griffiths. Citi has given about 175,000 employees access to AI tools such as Stylus, Workspaces, and Assist. The bank is deploying AI to strengthen customer service in US personal banking through a multi-year initiative using specialized GenAI tools to drive efficiency and operational excellence. Firmwide goals include building AI capabilities responsibly to enhance client and colleague experience, strengthen internal controls, and boost productivity. Earlier senior appointments target consumer focus and technology enablement.
