"I'm in ChatGPT (paid Plus subscription), asking about Windows BitLocker and it's F-ing showing me ADS TO SHOP AT TARGET. Yeah, screw this. Lose all your users. pic.twitter.com/2Z5AG8pnlJ - Benjamin De Kraker (@BenjaminDEKR) December 3, 2025"
"We've launched apps from some of our pilot partners since DevDay, including Target, and have been working to make the discovery mechanism for apps more organic inside ChatGPT."
"Anything that feels like an advertisement within ChatGPT needs to be handled with care. We fell short here."
Paid ChatGPT subscribers reported seeing brand suggestions and prompts that resembled advertisements appearing below chatbot responses, sometimes during unrelated conversations. A viral December 3 screenshot showed a Target shopping prompt while a user asked about Windows BitLocker. OpenAI characterized the items as app integrations launched from pilot partners since DevDay rather than traditional ads. Company staff acknowledged the feature felt ad-like, disabled the suggestions, and said they are improving model precision. OpenAI is working on controls to let users reduce or turn off such prompts entirely while refining the discovery mechanism.
