Andrej Karpathy joined Anthropic and started this week on the pre-training team. He said the next few years at the frontier of LLMs would be especially formative and that he was eager to return to research. Karpathy previously helped found OpenAI, led AI at Tesla, returned to OpenAI in 2023, then left to start Eureka Labs. He became widely known for “vibe coding,” describing what you want plainly and letting the model do the work, which influenced industry interest in bespoke agents. Anthropic’s models were cited in his viral post. Karpathy’s work also includes wiring an AI coding agent that ran unsupervised for two days to test and tweak training code.
