OpenAI plans to sell ads within ChatGPT to monetize a large base of free users and support infrastructure spending. ChatGPT currently records about 800 million weekly active users, with roughly 35 million paying subscribers. Ad placements could appear as soon as early 2026 and help fund a roughly $115 billion infrastructure plan by 2029. Google initially moved slowly to center generative AI in its products, especially search, which historically generated substantial ad revenue from traditional search results.
