A recent study explored the efficacy of AI chatbots in providing psychological support during war, specifically among women in Ukraine with anxiety disorders. Participants were divided into two groups: one received traditional therapy from licensed psychologists, while the other utilized an AI chatbot named Friend. The study revealed that both groups experienced anxiety reduction; however, the therapist group had significantly greater improvements. This highlights the current limitations of AI in therapy, suggesting that while chatbots can be supportive, they should augment rather than replace human therapists.
The therapist group saw a 45% drop on the Hamilton scale and a 50% drop on the Beck scale, substantially outpacing the AI group's improvement.
The findings suggest that while AI chatbots can provide valuable support, they are most effective when used alongside human therapists rather than as standalone solutions.
