Over the last 10 months, Chelsea Prudencio, a junior at Baruch College in Manhattan, immersed herself in Break Through Tech A.I. to work on a Pfizer project creating heart disease prediction models and get mentorship for technical job interviews.
Lower-income students, like Ms. Prudencio at public colleges, often lack access to crucial industry connections and experiences in fields such as A.I. and data science.
Break Through Tech aims to level the playing field for underrepresented groups in tech by providing A.I. skills, industry connections, and research opportunities, countering the advantage wealthier students have with traditional recruiting criteria.
The program is the largest of its kind in the U.S., focusing on reducing barriers for underrepresented college students, especially Latina and Black young women, to pursue tech careers and gain essential skills.
