Adjusting to Generative AI in Education Means Getting to the Roots
Briefly

The article posits a thought experiment around the early release of generative AI like ChatGPT. It explores how educators would prepare for this technology's impact on education, highlighting the difficulty of creating invulnerable assignments. The piece suggests that proactive measures should be implemented to adapt to AI capabilities rather than delaying until AI is fully integrated. It discusses the potential strategies for assessment, including reassessing assignment types and fostering engaging classroom methods that stand independent of these AI tools.
A first impulse might be to "proof" the assignment, to make it so the homework machine could not actually complete it.
Imagine if, in November 2022, OpenAI introduced ChatGPT to the world... and then coaxing the monster back inside before the villagers came after it.
To extend the fantasy part of the thought experiment, we have to assume we would actually do stuff to prepare for the eventual full release of the technology.
What would you do? There are certainly adjustments that can be made... but it is very difficult to make an invulnerable assignment.
