Torben Severson departed Amazon after 17 years in October and joined OpenAI as Vice President, Head of Global Business Development. Severson previously served as chief of staff to Amazon's retail CEO Doug Herrington and spent much of his career in business development and partnership deals. OpenAI confirmed the hire and Severson expressed enthusiasm about joining during a pivotal moment in technology. OpenAI's global business development team builds external partnerships and commercial strategy. OpenAI announced a $38 billion partnership with AWS, providing access to hundreds of thousands of Nvidia GPUs. OpenAI has hired more than 400 people over the past year, including multiple former Amazon employees.
