Almost four in ten translators said they've already lost work due to generative AI. Nearly half reported decreased income. Three-quarters believe GenAI will negatively impact future income.
"The livelihoods of translators are at risk," stated the Society of Authors, advocating for consent, remuneration, and transparency measures to protect translators.
"No one expects generative AI to be un-invented... It is not too late to ensure it is developed and used ethically," said Nicola Solomon, urging adherence to existing copyright frameworks.
Recent advancements in AI and machine translation services have significantly improved, threatening the $65bn translation industry. Companies like Google Translate and DeepL drive these changes.
