Apple has filed an appeal against a judge's ruling mandating that it open its App Store to increased competition. The ruling, issued by US District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers, determined that Apple was in contempt of an earlier injunction intended to facilitate cheaper payment options for developers. The judge criticized Apple's practices to sidestep the ruling and referred it for a potential criminal investigation. Despite Apple's denial of any violation, the legal battle highlights the ongoing tensions in the tech industry's approach to app distribution and payment processing.
"Apple sought to maintain a revenue stream worth billions in direct defiance of this court's injunction," Gonzalez Rogers said.
Gonzalez Rogers referred Apple and one of its executives to federal prosecutors for a possible criminal contempt investigation.
