Apple is planning to revamp its Safari web browser by integrating AI-powered search options, which may significantly impact Google's search advertising dominance. During an antitrust case, Apple executive Eddy Cue revealed that the company is exploring opportunities to include AI search providers like OpenAI and Perplexity AI in Safari. As news broke, Alphabet's shares dipped sharply, and analysts warned that Apple's shift could undermine Google's monopoly in search. Despite this, Google is attempting to defend its market position with the introduction of an AI mode.
"The loss of exclusivity at Apple should have very severe consequences for Google even if there are no further measures," D.A. Davidson analyst Gil Luria said.
"To be sure, Google is not defenseless. It has introduced an 'AI mode' on its search page to retain its millions of users from going away to other AI models."
