Apple is facing a class action lawsuit for failing to comply with a court ruling that mandated the company allow app developers to link to external payment systems. Developers claim that this non-compliance harmed their revenues, particularly Pure Sweat Basketball, which alleges it could have sold subscriptions directly to customers. Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers criticized Apple for its 'anticompetitive' actions and suggested that the company's executives, including Tim Cook, may have misled the court. The dispute stems from a 2021 ruling requiring more equitable treatment for app developers on the App Store.
Had Apple complied with the injunction, as required, Pure Sweat would have been able to sell subscriptions to its app directly to its customers.
The court ultimately held that Apple willfully violated the injunction to protect its revenues, and then 'reverse engineered' justifications to proffer to the court.
