Waymo to launch autonomous ride-hailing in London in 2026 as race with Uber and Lyft intensifies
""We're thrilled to bring the reliability, safety and magic of Waymo to Londoners," said Tekedra Mawakana, Waymo's co-CEO. "We've demonstrated how to responsibly scale fully autonomous ride-hailing, and we can't wait to expand the benefits of our technology to the United Kingdom.""
""I'm delighted that Waymo intends to bring their services to London next year," she said. "Boosting the AV sector will increase accessible transport options while bringing jobs, investment and opportunities to the UK.""
Waymo will roll out a fully driverless ride-hailing service in London in 2026 using Jaguar Land Rover I-Pace electric vehicles equipped with Waymo Driver technology. The company already operates fully driverless services in Phoenix, Los Angeles and San Francisco and will partner with fleet operator Moove to establish the London service. Competing ride-hailing firms Uber and Lyft are preparing autonomous offerings in the UK, with Uber working with Wayve and Lyft partnering with Baidu. Waymo is working with UK regulators to secure approvals under the government's proposed piloting scheme and maintains engineering teams in London and Oxford. The UK government welcomed the move as a boost for innovation, mobility and economic growth, and safety advocates have cautiously welcomed the expansion while noting past scrutiny of early AV deployments.
