UAW President Shawn Fain declared, 'We unanimously recommend to the membership that every UAW worker at Stellantis prepare for a fight, and we all get ready to vote YES to authorize a strike at Stellantis.' He highlighted serious violations of contracts and pointed to CEO Carlos Tavares’ mismanagement as reasons for the workers' grievances, emphasizing that current corporate behavior posed significant harm to union members.
Fain criticized Stellantis’ failure to reopen a plant in Belvidere, Illinois, which was promised in the contract. He stressed that the union has gathered substantial evidence of 'illegal behavior by Stellantis' and accused Tavares of 'steering Stellantis on a crash course' detrimental to their workforce.
The Stellantis National Dealer Council expressed their frustration, stating there are 'record-high inventory levels due to reckless short-term decision-making to secure record profits in 2023,' indicating that Tavares' strategies not only affected workers but also dealerships, leading to broader concerns about the company's operational decisions.
