The wait between Green Line trains will get longer this summer
Briefly

Starting June 15, the MBTA will implement a 2% reduction in scheduled trolley trips on the Green Line due to necessary anti-collision safety updates. The adjustments are a response to decreased vehicle availability, with an aim to improve safety through the Green Line Train Protection System (GLTPS). This summer's changes also include more frequent Orange Line service on weekdays, as well as updates to numerous bus routes. MBTA officials highlight that these measures are crucial for collision prevention and overall operational efficiency.
This is wayside equipment that was installed that is going to work in conjunction with equipment integrated into the vehicles themselves in order to prevent collisions of trains.
Reducing the headways allows operators to safely maintain a schedule that, on paper, was not achievable.
The Green Line delays are part of this summer's service changes, which also includes improved frequency on the Orange Line on weekdays and shifts in dozens of bus lines.
The GLTPS equipment will be used to improve safety across the Line, including real-time train location and speed enforcement.
