Riverside, California, has introduced the first fully self-driving public bus in the United States, following the approval of a two-year pilot program by the Riverside City Council. This electric shuttle will follow predetermined routes, showcasing Riverside's ambition to become a hub for innovative vehicle manufacturing. With plans to roll out three automated buses, the initiative is aimed at transforming public transportation. While the experience for commuters may feel familiar, it marks a significant leap towards modernizing the transportation landscape in the city.
It's one small step for public transportation commuters, and one giant leap toward Riverside becoming the next Motor City, or so the mayor hopes.
I like to say I have no lesser ambition than to be the new Detroit for vehicle manufacturing, Riverside is it, we are going to do this for the 21st century.
To date, other iterations of self-driving buses around the country are limited to private roads or properties... But not Riverside's, where officials say the whole route is mapped out.
While the experience isn't supposed to change much for passengers, it can still feel like a sign of big changes to come.
