Orange County city takes first steps to add aerial gondolas

Irvine's Great Park, an ambitious public project currently spanning 500 acres and under construction, aims to become larger than Central Park upon completion at 1,300 acres. With projections of annual visitors increasing from 6 million to 10-15 million, officials are concerned about the current car-dependent culture and are advocating for a 'park-once' concept. This would encourage visitors to park and explore various destinations within the park without needing to drive between them, enhancing the overall experience and accessibility of the park.
"We'd like to really push forward a park-once concept, where people are encouraged to come to the park, park their car and move through the park and hit multiple destinations without moving their car," said assistant city manager Sean Crumby at a meeting of the Great Park Board on Tuesday.
Irvine city council member and Great Park board chairman Mike Carroll called the park "one of the nation's most ambitious public projects" at a meeting this week.
