The MTA is ambitiously working towards an all-electric bus fleet by 2040, showcasing significant advances like the successful integration of zero-emission buses into service across NYC. With 75 electric buses currently operational, and additional projects underway, including the upgraded Charleston Depot, environmental benefits are evident as the MTA helps avoid 20 million metric tons of carbon emissions annually. Upcoming deployments are set to further enhance this transition, aiming to improve air quality and public health by reducing harmful pollutants.
Every year, the MTA allows New Yorkers to avoid emitting 20 million metric tons of carbon, the equivalent of keeping 4.5 million cars off the road.
In December, we finished our most ambitious project yet, the transformation of the Charleston Depot on Staten Island, involving the installation of 20 electric chargers.
Electric buses reduce harmful asthma-causing pollutants and create better public health outcomes for residents in New York City.
With Earth Day approaching, we're ramping up efforts to electrify our entire 5,800-strong bus fleet by 2040.
