The NYC transportation department proposed a rule change allowing moped riders to legally use the roadways on the Brooklyn and lower Queensboro Bridges. Currently barred from all city bridges, this change aims to alleviate congestion in bike lanes and acknowledges that many moped operators are delivery workers residing locally. The proposal stipulates that only registered mopeds with license plates can access the bridges, while still banning them from the Manhattan and Williamsburg bridges. This change is also in response to recurring safety concerns in bike lanes, particularly following a serious incident involving e-vehicles on the Manhattan Bridge.
Moped riders would be legally authorized to use the roadways on the Brooklyn Bridge and the lower level of the Queensboro Bridge under a rule change proposed by the city transportation department.
"There are barriers or bridge structures running along the Brooklyn Bridge and the lower roadway of the Ed Koch Queensboro Bridge that help protect riders in the event of a crash…"
The ~DOT proposal notes traffic rarely moves that fast. The speed limits on the bridges' roadways range from 30 to 35 mph - faster than many mopeds can travel.
Conflicts over space on bike lanes and pedestrian walkways have persisted for years...A bloody 2023 crash on the Manhattan Bridge bike lane injured four e-bike and e-scooter riders.
