Kathmandu, one of the most polluted cities globally, has seen a dramatic rise in electric vehicle (EV) sales, where 65% of new cars sold now are electric, significantly higher than in countries like the U.S. The transformation spurred by the Nepalese government's reduction of import duties on EVs led to a sharp increase in sales, especially in electric three-wheeled mini-buses. Owners benefit from much lower operating costs compared to traditional fuel vehicles. The presence and visibility of EVs in daily traffic underscore this rapid adoption.
There's been a really remarkable transformation in the uptake of electric vehicles. Only five years ago, EVs made up a tiny fraction of new car sales in Nepal.
So many public policy challenges are complicated and nuanced and hard to understand, but this one is the opposite. It's incredibly simple.
Charging an EV could be a tenth of the cost of refueling another vehicle, or even less. The models that are available from companies are also desirable.
You see electric vehicles every day, all day long. It feels like it's half of what's on the road.
