Gothenburg's self-driving bus trammed on day one
A self-driving bus service in Gothenburg began carrying passengers on May 25 on route 169 between Gothenburg Central Station and Liseberg. During its second passenger-carrying trip, the bus was struck from behind shortly after departure. The collision damaged both the bus and the tram, and the bus required towing. Reports indicate the bus braked and was rear-ended by the tram. A spokesperson for the operator said a small number of passengers were on board and no one was seriously injured, with both vehicles sustaining minor damage. The project started in 2024, with trials planned to end by 2027, and a driver remains required even though controls are not used during normal operation.
"However, someone else driving into it is a whole different challenge. On the rear of the Karsan bus was the warning "Keep your distance! The bus can brake sharply!" but that did not appear to deter the tram. As a rule of thumb, trams tend to have the right of way since they cannot swerve around a suddenly slowing vehicle."
