City To Fix Dangerous Bushwick Intersection Where Driver Killed Motorcyclist - Streetsblog New York City
Briefly

In an effort to enhance safety following a tragic fatal crash, Bushwick will prohibit cars on the dangerous Scott Avenue street and implement a parking ban at adjacent corners to improve visibility. Philippe Haussmann, a motorcyclist killed last August, became the catalyst for these changes. His mother, Joann Perahia, advocated for this redesign after the incident. The Department of Transportation plans various improvements, including narrowing the street and constructing pedestrian-friendly infrastructure, in response to increased foot traffic in the neighborhood, therefore prioritizing public safety over parking needs.
"Unfortunately, somebody has to die before something gets done," said Joann Perahia. "I know that parts of Scott Avenue will lose certain things, but my main thing was to make it safer."
"We have significantly more foot traffic than we ever had," said Council Member Jennifer. The changes will increase safety for an area that has seen a surge in activity in recent years.
