The U.S. Department of Agriculture has put the 1890 Scholars Program on hold, which provided full tuition for students from underserved areas attending historically Black colleges focused on agriculture and related studies. This suspension follows a funding freeze initiated by the Trump administration, intended to review the alignment of spending with executive orders on climate and equity issues. Despite the suspension, the Department assured that over 300 existing scholars would be allowed to complete their studies. The program dates back to 1992 and references the historical establishment of HBCUs through the Morrill Act.
"The 1890 Scholars Program has been suspended pending further review," the Department of Agriculture said in a post on the program's website.
"every scholar - over 300 - regardless of matriculation date, was retained to finish their studies and complete their work with the Department."
