India's Prime Minister Modi emphasized the importance of self-reliance and energy independence during a speech on Independence Day. He asserted that freedom is compromised by excessive dependence on others. Modi addressed the threat of increased US tariffs due to India's oil purchases from Russia, reinforcing India's goal of achieving energy independence. He also committed to defending agricultural interests against US trade demands, highlighting the need for India's farmers' protection. Amidst these topics, Modi maintained a defiant stance against external pressures while advocating for national self-reliance.
"Self-reliance is the foundation of developed India," Modi said after a flypast of military helicopters scattered flower petals above an invited crowd of thousands.
"Freedom becomes meaningless if someone becomes too dependent on others." Modi acknowledged "that we remain dependent on many countries to meet our energy needs."
"But to build a truly self-reliant India, we must achieve energy independence," he stressed.
Modi vowed to defend India's agricultural interests and that of its farmers, "like a wall."
