"Catalonia has confirmed its first cases of African Swine Fever (ASF) since 1994 after two infected wild boars were found dead near the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona campus. Authorities have immediately imposed strict measures, including a total ban on entering forests and natural areas in 12 surrounding towns. While swine fever cannot be contracted by humans, for dogs, cats and even horses, it can prove fatal."
"To prevent the virus from spreading, Catalan authorities are taking drastic action to trap the local wild boar population within the affected zone. Emilio García Muro, Director General of Agri-Food Production Health and Animal Welfare, announced that wildlife corridors under highways will be blocked with fencing and pipes sealed. "The goal is to keep the wild boars that live there from leaving the area," he stated. Trained detection dogs and rural agents are actively patrolling the perimeter to locate and remove any additional dead boars."
Catalonia confirmed African Swine Fever (ASF) after two infected wild boars were discovered dead near the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona campus, the first cases since 1994. Authorities imposed a total ban on entering forests and natural areas in 12 municipalities in the Vallès region and established a 20-kilometre surveillance zone bounded by major roads. Measures include blocking wildlife corridors under highways with fencing and sealed pipes, patrolling with trained detection dogs and rural agents, and trapping the local wild boar population to prevent spread. Swine fever cannot infect humans but can be fatal to dogs, cats and horses.
