The Cubs may be looking at going into the postseason without their closer. Daniel Palencia entered the ninth inning of Chicago's game against the Nationals earlier today, but surrendered five runs and was pulled without recording an out. The team termed Palencia's ailment "shoulder tightness" at the time of his removal, but manager Craig Counsell told reporters (including Bruce Levine of 670 The Score) following the game that, more specifically, Palencia was suffering from a posterior capsule strain in his right shoulder.

Phillies shortstop Trea Turner made an early departure during the seventh inning of today's game with the Marlins due to what the Phils announced as a right hamstring strain. A throwing error from Miami shortstop allowed Turner to reach base, but Turner immediately left the field and headed into the Phils' dugout, and was replaced by pinch-runner Edmundo Sosa.

At the earliest, Finnegan could return Sept. 16 for the Tigers' opener of a three-game series against the Cleveland Guardians at Comerica Park, but the 34-year-old might need more than the minimum stay on the injured list. "It's mild, which is a good sign," manager A.J. Hinch said before Friday's game against the Chicago White Sox at Comerica Park. "The only way to strengthen and rehab this is to have a little period of shutting down games.

Adolis García is out of the Rangers' lineup today in Arizona. He pulled up while beating out a force play in the ninth inning of last night's contest. He gingerly came around to score on Jake Burger's RBI triple but was lifted for defensive replacement Alejandro Osuna in the next half-inning. Manager Bruce Bochy revealed this evening that García has been diagnosed with a Grade 2 right quad strain (via the MLB.com injury tracker).

Twins starter David Festa is done for the season after suffering a setback while working back from a shoulder injury, relays Bobby Nightengale of The Minnesota Star-Tribune. Festa is headed for a consultation with noted orthopedist Dr. Keith Meister. The 25-year-old Festa has been out since the middle of July. Minnesota sent him to Triple-A St. Paul for a rehab start on August 28. Festa struck out five over 2 2/3 scoreless innings. It seems he came out of the appearance with renewed shoulder pain. That'll shut him down for the year. The Twins will hope there's nothing structurally amiss that'll impact his availability for 2026.

Perhaps the Yankees' biggest September call-up of them all is coming in the form of relief pitcher Ryan Yarbrough's activation off the injured list. The Bronx Bombers have the veteran lefty back in their ranks, making the move during their off-day on Monday ahead of Tuesday's series opener against the Astros down in Houston. The 33-year-old has been down since mid-June after suffering an oblique strain.

The Rockies placed Dugan Darnell on the 15-day injured list on August 22 and then moved him to the 60-day IL two days later, officially ending the right-hander's first Major League season. Darnell was initially sidelined due to left hip inflammation, but he told the Denver Post's Patrick Saunders and other reporters that tests revealed a torn left hip labrum, and surgery will be required.

the news the Sox received Friday was good, with manager Will Venable suggesting Vargas' stay on the injured list might not last much longer than the standard 10 days. "We're hopeful that after his 10 days that he's close and has progressed to the point where we can activate him," Venable said. "It looked serious. The Red Sox made a series of roster moves Thursday morning, most notably reinstating right-handed reliever Justin Slaten from the 60-day IL. That move brings Boston's 40-man roster to capacity. They'd previously had a vacancy after outrighting infielder Abraham Toro. The Red Sox also activated outfielder Rob Refsnyder from the 10-day injured list. To open active roster spots for Slaten and Refsnyder, they optioned southpaw Jovani Moran to Triple-A Worcester and placed first baseman Nathaniel Lowe on the paternity list.

MILWAUKEE -- The Brewers placed All-Star closer Trevor Megill on the 15-day injured list on Wednesday with a right flexor strain in his right arm and signed right-hander Erick Fedde, who joins his third organization this season. Megill, 31, is 5-3 with a 2.54 ERA and 30 saves in 44 appearances while striking out 58 batters over 46 innings. He has blown three of his last four save opportunities.

3:10pm: Romano has indeed been placed on the 15-day injured list due to inflammation in his right middle finger, the Phillies announced.

The Mets announced today that right-hander Reed Garrett has been placed on the 15-day injured list due to right elbow inflammation, retroactive to August 23rd.

He missed nearly a month due to that injury, and after being activated in early July he hit just .200/.290/.365 over 31 games before heading back to the IL due to his ailing hand. Chapman received a cortisone shot during this latest stint on the shelf, and both he and the Giants are surely hoping he'll be able to hit more like his first half self (.243/.360/.452 in 65 games) going forward.

The Astros announced that right-hander has been reinstated from the 60-day injured list and optioned to Triple-A Sugar Land. The 40-man roster had a vacancy from Tayler Scott being designated for assignment earlier this week, but it is now full. Houston also announced that outfielder Taylor Trammell has been placed on the 10-day IL due to a cervical muscle strain, with infielder Brice Matthews recalled as the corresponding move.
