Nashville woman sues state for firing over social media post criticizing Charlie Kirk
""Our democracy suffers when public employees fear to voice what they are free to think," said FIRE Senior Attorney Greg Greubel. "They can't be fired simply because their boss or folks online don't like the opinions they share off the clock.""
""I've never backed down from a fight in my life, and I don't plan to start now.""
Monica Meeks, a 20-year Army veteran, was fired from the Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance after posting on social media that Charlie Kirk was a "White Supremacist." Her profile did not link her to her job, but online users identified her workplace and pushed for her termination. Meeks filed a lawsuit against Tennessee Commissioner of Commerce and Insurance Carter Lawrence, claiming the firing violated her First Amendment rights and asserting the post did not disrupt government functions. The Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE) represents Meeks and criticized the chilling effect on public employees' speech. Several other Midstate educators and a former MTSU administrator have filed similar suits.
