Greenland: Trump signals tariffs on nations that oppose plan
"I may put a tariff on countries if they don't go along with Greenland, because we need Greenland for national security,"
"Greenland. I wonder what for? A trip?...Fifteen Italians, 15 French, 15 Germans it sounds like the start of a joke,"
President Donald Trump said he may impose tariffs on countries that do not support US control of Greenland, citing national security. Trump has repeatedly advocated US control of the self-governing island that is part of the Kingdom of Denmark, and this is the first instance of suggesting tariffs to pursue that aim. A bipartisan group of ten US senators arrived in Copenhagen to counter the threats. European forces have begun arriving on the Arctic island, and a Danish navy ship patrols in Nuuk. Italy declined participation in the Danish-led reconnaissance mission and publicly mocked the initiative.
