Lhamo Dhondup, known as the Dalai Lama, was born in 1935 to farmers in Qinghai. Identified as the 14th reincarnation at two, he engaged politically after China's control over Tibet in 1950. Fearing abduction, he fled to India in 1959, where he established a government-in-exile and a parliament for Tibetans. The Dalai Lama has championed Tibetan autonomy and expressed his commitment to the well-being of others in his later years, particularly during his 90th birthday celebrations.
At the age of two, he was deemed by a search party to be the 14th reincarnation of Tibet's spiritual and temporal leader after identifying several of his predecessor's possessions.
In India, the Dalai Lama opened up his government-in-exile to ordinary Tibetans with an elected parliament.
Thousands of other Tibetans have lived in exile in India since Chinese troops crushed the uprising in the Tibetan capital Lhasa in 1959.
In the time I have left, I will continue to dedicate myself to the well-being of others as much as possible.
