Keycard has announced the pre-sale launch of Shell, an open-source hardware wallet designed for enhanced management of digital assets. Unlike traditional wallets that often compromise security and transparency, Shell provides a fully verifiable architecture and utilizes EAL6+ certified smart cards to ensure private keys remain secure. Backed by the Status team, the wallet enables users to seamlessly manage multiple wallets with interchangeable smart cards. Pre-orders are available at a discounted rate and come with exclusive rewards as it gears for global launch in October 2025.
"Hardware wallets need a complete rethink," says Guy-Louis Grau, Project Lead at Keycard. "Users rarely realize that most hardware wallets allow private keys to be exported outside secure elements or rely on upgradable secure elements-both of which compromise the integrity and transparency of the device."
Shell is about more than security, it's designed for those who demand verifiable control over their hardware and digital assets.
Currently, hardware wallets often market themselves as transparent and open source, yet many lack true transparency in their designs—relying on closed-source components, exportable keys, or upgradeable secure elements.
Shell sets a new benchmark in wallet architecture, powered by an EAL6+ certified, open-source smart card that signs transactions and stores keys internally.
