"I should not have to be scared of a politician. I should not have to worry about my safety or being attacked," said Thomas after the incident.
"It looked like it was getting contentious, so I started recording the conversation," Thomas recounted, explaining the lead-up to the physical altercation.
The San Leandro police are conducting an investigation into the altercation that occurred during a Democratic Club forum, which sent two individuals to the emergency room.
Azevedo has not commented on the incident, despite multiple inquiries, leaving questions surrounding the altercation unresolved.
